Hydraulic Ram Effective Area Calculator for Pull Testers
The gauge-to-load conversion needs the ram's effective area. Work it out from the piston diameter, or from the piston and inner seal diameters for a hollow (centre-hole) ram, then see the load at any gauge reading.
Ram dimensions
For a hollow ram, d is the diameter of the inner sealed surface the pressure acts against, which is usually larger than the through-hole. Nothing you type is uploaded or saved.

Effective area from measured diameters: solid A = π × D² / 4, hollow A = π × (D² − d²) / 4. The tester manufacturer's stated effective area or calibration table takes precedence. Calculated with the free tool at calyx-ai.net/qa/hydraulic-ram-effective-area/ (Quality Tester Solutions LLC).
How it works
Solid piston: A = π × D² / 4. Hollow ram: A = π × (D² − d²) / 4, the ring between the piston diameter and the inner seal diameter. Ideal load = gauge pressure × A. Unit factors are exact (1 in = 25.4 mm, 1 psi = 1 lbf/in², 1 bar = 100 kPa, 1 lbf = 4.4482216152605 N). Two checks: a 1.128 in solid piston has about 1.0 in², so 1,000 psi gives about 1,000 lbf; a hollow ram with D = 50 mm and d = 20 mm has 1,649.34 mm², so 100 bar gives 16.49 kN.
Measured diameters give an estimate. Seal friction and gauge error make a real tester read differently, which is why testers are calibrated. Where the manufacturer states the effective area, or the calibration certificate gives a pressure-to-load table, use those, and use this page for cross-checks. The tool does not choose loads or limits.
